This is the hole itself, as you can see, the lath is in fairly good condition. (The gray between the boards is old plaster.) Though the hole itself is only about 2X3 to 3X3, the bulging and cracked plaster means that I'm going to have to clean off a significantly larger portion before beginning the actual repairs.
This shot shows a slightly different angle. It also lets you see some of the cracks and bulging.
Here we have the doorway to the master bedroom, so that you can see the comparative size of the hole. Joy.
