Oscar Makes Me Grouchy

This morning, I opened my favorite news sites and saw the Oscars. There was a little on the sequestering, a little on the Pope's resignation and potential replacements, and a tiny amount on overseas relations. But, the majority of the front pages were splashed with liberal accounts of Oscar. That makes me grouchy.

Why aren't we looking at budget issues? Why aren't we discussing the potential 'relief' of Iran's UN Sanctions? Or, how about that Barnes and Noble is getting ready to sell its retail properties? Instead, we've got entire sites - supposedly serious news sites - plastered with Argo.

Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't have objected to a blurb to one side with links to know more. But, on +CNN one third of the front page is covered in Oscar articles. The same with the +The Huffington Post. Hello? When did hard news become entertainment items covered in +Cosmopolitan Magazine and +Vanity Fair? Or even, (gasp, choke) Bop Magazine?

I'm impressed to say that +Fox News, longtime mouthpiece of the Republican Party, has only two small pictures and two sentences. Where are they? In the links section. Admittedly, the biggest article on the home page spends most of its time near-libelously insisting to us that +President Barrack Obama is holding America hostage and refusing to compromise. Still, at least they're talking about something related to actual news.

+Reuters is fairly sensible - there is just one small blurb. That's not really suprising, since the news site focuses on things that impact the real world in a meaningful way.... Yes, I went there. The decision of who was the Best Actor of last year will not end world hunger, establish lasting peace, or cure cancer and HIV/AIDS.

I know people need to relax, take a moment and breathe. I know that we can't run on all news all the time. However, we need to keep in mind one thing: That's what fictional shows are for, not news outlets.
